Main topics and aims
The working group was found in 1988 and deals with methods, techniques and concepts
concerning development, building and usage of databases as well as of environmental information systems.

Working group's aims
- Development and proving of innovative concepts for information systems in the environmental sector
- by sharing knowledge between experts covering various disciplines like informatics, biology, geography, geology, chemistry and medicine working in science, economy and public administration.
Current topics include:
- Databases and environmental information systems on the web (internet, intranet, extranet)
- Trends with smartphones and tablet PCs as well as their impacts on EIS developments
- Interaction of databases, other EIS components and different methodes like geographic information systems (GIS)
- Meta information systems and their implementation
- Semantic web
- Prototypical examination of complex systems (e.g. environmental data catalogues, soil information systems, chemical databases, environmental specimen bank, ecosystem research)
- Object oriented analysis and modelling of (environmental) datas, functions and processes
Participation
- Participating in the working group requires no membership in any organization.
- The structure of working groups serves in the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI, German Informatics Society) as a special platform available also for experts being no GI-member to participate with topical proposals, discussions, reviews and suggestions.
